No matter how much money you earn, without the proper financial management, you will eventually lose what you have. It’s important to know how much money is coming in and how much you are spending.

If you are looking forward to an early retirement, you have to begin managing your personal finances now. Here are the steps you need to take to better manage your finances.alt=

First of all, you should create a personal income statement, which will allow you to see how much money you earn and spend in a month. If you are in debt, this is a great way to analyze how you got into that position in the first place. You should also make a monthly budget. This is especially important if you are not in good standing financially. Remember: don’t spend more than you earn.

Be sure to set aside money for savings. You can do this in a number of ways. You can open another account and ask your bank to automatically deduct 5 to 10 percent of your monthly salary and transfer it to your savings. The formula should be Earnings – Savings = Expenses.

Set financial goals and try to meet them. This can be paying your debt off or saving a certain amount of money within a period of time.

There are a lot of tools that can help you make personal financial management simple and easy. You can use online money management like mint.com to consolidate all of your accounts and automatically create a budget for you. If you don’t want to use the computer to do your budget, a pencil and a pad of paper will do.

If you do decide to create your budget online, be cautious. You will have to provide personal financial account information in order for any service to pull in your financial information. Make sure any site you use is secure. You can tell if it’s secure if the URL contains “https” and not just “http.”
