Many small business owners make the mistake of letting themselves get bogged down in the minutia of the day to day tasks it takes to keep a business running and successful. And to top it off, if you're like most small businesses these days, you're doing everything with a smaller staff because of recent cutbacks.
But before you get caught up in all the things on your to-do list, stop everything. Focus on the work that will actually produce growth for your company. To see your company grow financially – and otherwise – follow these five tips:
• Stop paying attention to the bad news. Rather than focus on what's going wrong in the business world, refocus your attention on connecting with your customers. It will increase your bottom line – guaranteed.
• End a contentious relationship. If you've got a customer that is more trouble than he's worth, cut him loose, and go out and replace him. Morale will go up and you may find yourself with a greater and more profitable customer in his place.
• Don't answer your own e-mail. Most business owners spend way too much time tackling their in-boxes. Ask your assistant to take over and handle your e-mail, and instead of spending time on replies, spend time with your employees and customers. Simply walking around and talking to people will make a huge difference for you, your staff and your customer base.
• Stop eating alone. If you don't spend time with professional contacts and employees, you'll lose vital business leads. Just a simple meal can be a catalyst for gaining that multi-million dollar client.
The bottom line is this – don't get caught up in the details. Focus on what matters most. And your bottom line will take care of itself.
